The IU Indianapolis Career Services Council is committed to working in the best interest of IU Indianapolis students. The IU Indianapolis Career Services Council has established the following recruiting policies and procedures to assist recruiters in connecting with our students and alumni in a fair, ethical, and legal manner. We reserve the right to refuse job postings and virtual or on-campus recruiting requests at our discretion.
The Career Services Council (CSC) invites employers and organizations to use our services provided they meet the following criteria:
- Employers abide by the Principles for Employment Professionals of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
- Employers must adhere to all Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)laws established by the federal government and the state of Indiana.
- Employers must follow federal rules and regulations related to employment in the FairLabor Standards Act (FLSA).
- Employers wanting to recruit students for unpaid internships must meet the test for unpaid interns in FLSA Fact Sheet #71: Internship Programs Under The Fair Labor StandardsAct.
In addition to these legal and ethical guidelines, the following recruiting practices will NOT be allowed:
- Providing fraudulent information and/or misrepresentation of positions or company information through dissemination of dishonest information or absence of information to any IU Indianapolis Department or to students.
- Breaching confidentiality of student information without prior written consent of the student.
- Requiring, at the time of application, personal information such as bank accounts, Social Security numbers, or photo of the applicants.
- Organizations sponsoring an individual to establish his/her own business for the purpose of selling products or services, and/or recruiting other individuals to establish their own businesses.
- Organizations require an initial payment or investment—with the organization itself serving as an umbrella or parent investments of this type may include, but are not limited to: requirement to attend unpaid orientation or training sessions; direct payment of a fixed fee; payment to attend orientation or training sessions; and/or purchase or rent of a starter kit, sales kit, samples, or presentation supplies.
- Receipt of complaints by users of our services about job postings, employers, or career. If we determine that a complaint is justified, we may choose not to sponsor recruiting activities for the employer involved.
EMPLOYER PROCEDURES FOR ON-CAMPUS or VIRTUAL RECRUITING

- Employers are encouraged to contact the school directly for the major(s) they wish to recruit to schedule on-campus interviews or information sessions.
- Inquiries about hiring work-study students should be sent to the Office of Student Employment (https://recruiting.indianapolis.iu.edu/).
- Employers with questions concerning hiring/sponsoring international students should contact the Office of International Affairs (https://international.indianapolis.iu.edu/).
- IU Indianapolis will not provide technical support or equipment (lap-top computer, projector) for any recruiting activities located off-campus.
- If an organization fails to submit payment/documentation of payment for any IU Indianapolis event or program, they may be blocked from recruiting at IU Indianapolis.
- If it is necessary to cancel an interview schedule, please do so as far in advance as possible. Space is in high demand, and your early cancellation will allow IU Indianapolis to re-assign resources.
POSTING JOBS AT IU Indianapolis
- Employers may create a free account to post opportunities on Handshake.
- IU Indianapolis will accept appropriate job announcements via electronic methods only; we are a paperless resource center.
- All conditions for positions must be clearly publicized in the position description and qualifications.
- Each job posting must recruit for one specific position. Multiple vacancies for the same job title are acceptable in the same post; however, multiple vacancies in multiple positions should be posted separately.
- Job titles should describe the main role(s), functions and responsibilities of the position. Vague titles (e.g., student worker) or general functional areas (e.g., office support) are not acceptable and will not be approved.
- Job description provided is detailed, clear, and comprehensive, including duties and qualifications. Qualifications should outline both required and preferred education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Compensation is indicated and based on base salary (not including commission).
- Volunteer opportunities are not accepted as job postings in the IU Indianapolis Handshake system.
- Solicitations to enroll in any academic program will not be approved.
- Graduate assistantships will only be approved from the Indiana University system.
- Unpaid internships must include expected learning outcomes and benefits to the student or may be rejected.
- Company/organization must have an active website and company email address (non-specific address such as Gmail may be rejected).
- Home-based businesses will not be approved.
- Virtual businesses or those where a physical address cannot be confirmed must provide a valid business license upon request within 14 days.
- Full-time positions must be relevant to the majors at IU Indianapolis and/or require a minimum of a bachelor's degree.
- U.S. based organizations may post international opportunities.
- We do not accept internationally based organization's job postings at this time.
RESUME REFERRALS
IU Indianapolis does not release resumes to employers without student consent. Employers can download resumes via Handshake for all students who have uploaded a resume and interacted with the company via applying to a job or interview schedule, RSVPing for an employer hosted event, or signing up for a session with the employer at a virtual fair.
SERVICES PROVIDED TO THIRD PARTY AGENCIES
IU Indianapolis Career Services offices define third-party recruiters as agencies, organizations, or individuals recruiting candidates for temporary, part-time, or full-time employment opportunities for other organizations rather than for internal positions. This includes entities that make referrals or recruit for profit or not for profit, and it includes agencies that collect student information to be disclosed to employers for purposes of recruitment and employment. Examples are employment agencies, search firms, contract recruiters, venture capital firms acting on behalf of their portfolio companies, and online job posting or resume referral services.
Third-party recruiters may utilize Career Center job listing services, participate in on-campus recruiting, and attend select career fairs. They will be required to verify in advance whether they are recruiting for their own organizations or for their clients. Third-party firms who are recruiting for positions within their own organizations must clearly differentiate those opportunities from their client engagements. Failure to abide by these third-party requirements will result in loss of access to IU Indianapolis Career Services.
Third-party recruiters representing client organizations must:
- Verify that they charge no fees of any kind to student or alumni applicants.
- Identify themselves as a third-party recruiter in their Handshake employer profile and all client job announcements.
- Provide accurate position descriptions and include specific client names in all jobs posted on Handshake.
- Only release candidate information provided to the identified employer in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Re-disclosure of candidate information to any other parties is not permitted.
